THE DAY WE FIGHT BACK AGAINST INTERNET SURVILANCE
Such an event obviously cannot completely change the reality of internet surveillance and the government's engagement in such practices. Although it can encourage individuals to understand the bills and laws that presently exist (or are soon to exist). And how they can engage with government representatives in order to have present laws appealed or entirely abolished.
What is it and what was its purpose?
An organized event that encouraged individuals to educate the ways that the NSA (the National Surveillance Agency in the united states) were performing surveillance and the bills that were being passed and proposed by the US government. Advocating for the government to bring into law the USA Freedom Act which would regulate abuses of surveillance practices performed by the NSA.
Who was involved?
Approximately 6000 sites featured the same banner (including such websites as Reddit and Tumblr) Obviously being seen by thousands of site visitors. The banner read “Dear internet, we’re sick of complaining about the NSA. We want new laws that curtail online surveillance.”
Who organized it?
The event was inspired by a similar movement in 2012 founded by Aaron Swartz (organized in part in his memory). Swartz was a pivotal activist against government surveillance founding Demand Progress.
